Leaders who stand apart intellectually and are prone to complex language are less inspiring. When the IQ gap between a leader and employees exceeds about 18 points, staff begin to rate the boss as less competent. Meanwhile, introverts tend to pass on emergent leadership positions, due to their expectation of high stress, meaning we may miss out on their expertise. Either way, feedback is necessary to support and challenge leaders who receive less and less as they become more senior.
