Career stories as currency: How to make marketplaces more human

Talent marketplaces promise visibility and opportunity. But for many employees, the experience still feels abstract. Lists of roles and skills can feel distant unless something more human gives them meaning. This is where career stories matter – they are the currency that bring internal mobility alive.

Employees trust stories about colleagues more than dashboards. When they hear how someone like them moved roles, took on a stretch assignment, or shifted into a different function, they feel permission to do the same. Stories show what mobility really looks like and lower the fear that often holds people back.

This came through strongly in our recent webinar, “From skills to careers: Unlocking ROI from talent marketplaces”. Marketplace engagement rises when organisations make career journeys visible. Employees want to see people who have navigated uncertainty, grown through experience and succeeded.

This is also where executive sponsorship comes into its own. When leaders share their own career stories, it sends a particularly strong signal that movement is valued and normal. Their consistent messaging reinforces that exploration is supported, expected and safe.

Stories help managers as well. Career conversations become easier when they can point to examples that feel relatable and achievable. It turns abstract skills data into human possibility and shifts the tone from risk to curiosity.

Organisations that use storytelling well see the marketplace differently. Instead of relying on plug-and-play communications, they empower internal champions to share their experiences and career journeys. These stories act as both cultural signals and communication tactics, helping employees understand how they can stretch themselves.

Talent marketplaces are helped by technology, but career stories make them human. When you combine them, good things happen.

So, ask yourself this: Are your employees seeing dashboards, or people –  like them  – moving and growing? The answer reveals how human your marketplace really is.
