Computer scientist and author Cal Newport has interviewed musicians, programmers, screenwriters and venture capitalists who love their work. His conclusion? “Follow your passion” is flawed advice.

In a new book Newport argues “pre-existing passions are rare, have little to do with how most people end up loving their work, and can lead to dangerous anxiety and job-hopping.” His alternative? Master a rare skill, and use it to craft a job you love.
